His mother, Marion, teases her son about his dreams to build a large robot ant with a
drawing of her son riding on the ant's back. Then it comes true.
Reginald Roger Rippengall, known to his pupils and students as Mr Rippengall, is the IT and robotics sciences, master who recognises the astonishing determination of Jimmy Watson, in his quest to design and build a robot animatronic DinoBot.
Reginald is very strict, tall and lean. He does not tolerate badly behaved students, and is both feared and respected, but rewards those who strive to learn, with equal gusto. Thus is generally well liked.
At first, nearly all of his teachers thought Jimmy's notion to be rather more than just a little far-fetched. But as the lad had demonstrated a grasp of what was involved, to include a project costing that would have done their business school proud. Slowly, and one by one, Jimmy won his teachers over. Even they, began to think his aspirations might be possible.
Mr Rippengall works closely with Mr Henderson, the Physics master, who has to work overtime to keep up with the mechanics and applied maths. Reginald, is learning from the young Watson, as much as his star pupil is gleaning from the robotics and Information Technology teacher.
In IT and robotics, Jimmy is learning about electronic circuit boards, computers and programming. When Reginald asks Jimmy why he chose the DinoBot kit as his starting point, Jimmy explained it was because of the amazing abilities of the ant as an insect. Being able to lift well over 20 times its own weight, and several hundred times its weight, in a living chain. Jimmy went on the tell Mr Rippengall about the giant insects that lived in Antarctica. That inspired him to want to create a mechatronic that could perform useful tasks, in a world where humans are the dominant species. And robotics could be part of the puzzle for sustainable living, to include, space exploration.
Along with Hannibal Henderson, Reginald is a bit worried about Jimmy, though he seems happy enough. Mr Rippengall is kept in the loop when his mother Marion calls to speak with Hannibal Henderson.
In the round, Hailsham Community College, was more than pleased to extend every facility to help Jimmy achieve.
