His mother, Marion, teases her son about his dreams to build a large robot ant with a
drawing of her son riding on the ant's back. Then it comes true.
Jamie Finn Moonlight, is not an enemy of Jimmy Watson, he just hates all nerds. He is a playground bully who attends the local school in Hailsham with his mate Johnny Baxter. He is disruptive in classes, rude to teachers and destructive of property, and is frequently excluded. But not yet expelled.
He was a pupil at Herstmonceux Church of England Primary school, where his bad behaviour developed, and his learning difficulties separated him intellectually from other pupils. He is interested in farming, and likes treating trees. The only time he behaves and takes things seriously. He has a thing about gardening, and would like to get into landscaping when he is older. Because, he likes physical work outdoors.
Jamie is frequently in trouble with the local police. Typically for vandalism and breaches of the peace. His nickname is "Floodlight," because he has been caught on security cameras so many times, very often lit up by night-time sensor lights. It is a standing joke that if you want to get caught larking about, take 'Floodlight' with you.
Jamie helps Johnny break into Jimmy's shed, as an accomplice. When Johnny gets tazed, Jamie runs off in terror at seeing what he thinks is a demon attack his mate. In the process of doing a runner, Jamie breaks a leg, when he lands badly on a rock and stumbles, having leapt a fence almost in one bound, still managing to hobble away at some pace, from sheer fright and pumping adrenaline. Despite the pain, that would multiply later. He genuinely thought he was going to die, mauled by the devil himself for all his wrongdoing, come back to haunt him.
Where Johnny is detained with zip-ties and the police are called. Jimmy does not grass up Jamie. Neither does Johnny, though the local police know Johnny always hangs about with Jamie.
Jamie is taken to Accident and Emergency for his broken leg, the following morning. The Ambulance Paramedics make out a report of the accident, and know the time of the injury. Hence, the police have what they need to prosecute, when they find skin and blood at the scene of the crime, with a positive DNA match.
