JIMMY WATSON - His mother, Marion, teases her son about his dreams to build a large robot ant with a drawing of her son riding on the ant's back. Then it comes true.

Marion Watson is a retired teacher and a very good fine artist. Her son Jimmy attends the local school in Hailsham

Marion is married to Timothy, a General in the British Army, former active, soldier who is sometimes stationed in Germany. As his mother, Marion encourages Jimmy in his projects. She recognises his genius level programming and marvels at it.

Some years before, Marion was a teacher at the Church of England Primary School at Herstmonceux. Later, a part time teacher at Hailsham Community College. Where, they still remembered her as an exceptionally gifted artist, and English Language teacher.

Marion, loved to surf when she was younger. Bude was her favourite haunt. And, Birling gap near Eastbourne. She also love her Volkswagen surfing bus. Built in 1979 and still going strong. Thanks to her husband, Tim's, Welding and mechanical skills, and his devotion to her.

Mrs Watson secretly adds money to Jimmy's stash under his floorboards, knowing it is so that he can build his dream robot. She knows Jimmy has a crush on Julia Roberts, a very clever girl at his school. She also knows about Johnny Baxter, from bruises over the years.

Marion is a keen surfer, and loves to drive her beloved T2 Volkswagen Kombi Camper to the West Country, Cornwall, Devon, the Lake District and Scotland. Her historic VW is looked after by her husband Tim, who enjoys restoring classic vehicles. General Watson is a competent welder and mechanic. Also rebuilding air cooled boxer engines, and servicing his own Jeep Cherokee.

MARION'S TOP SURFING FILMS

A blend of classics, documentaries, and modern favourites — ideal for shaping the Watsons’ surfing world.

1. Point Break (1991)
A cult classic featuring adrenaline‑fuelled surf sequences, spiritual wave philosophy, and the iconic Bodhi–Utah dynamic.
Listed among the most epic surf films. For: adrenaline, moral tension, undercover intrigue

Tim’s MI6 background gives the story a subtle “agent‑in‑flip‑flops” flavour. The ethical conflict between ambition and integrity mirrors Paul and Sheelagh’s arc. Anthony’s stealthy interventions echo the film’s covert energy.

2. The Endless Summer (1966)
Often considered the definitive surf documentary. Two surfers travel the world chasing the perfect wave — pure surfing soul.
Highlighted as essential viewing.

For: road‑trip energy, sun‑drenched optimism, wanderlust. The Watson family’s journey in Miss Ocean echoes the film’s sense of exploration. Its iconic, minimalist poster style could influence your book‑cover aesthetic. The warm narration vibe fits Jimmy’s perspective beautifully.

3. Big Wednesday (1978)
A nostalgic, character‑driven story about friendship, growing up, and the Californian surf scene. Frequently ranked among the greatest surf films. For: nostalgia, friendship, coming‑of‑age themes. Perfect for Jimmy’s teenage arc — finding identity through waves and adventure. The film’s emotional maturity adds weight to the family dynamics.

4. Riding Giants (2004)
A breathtaking documentary about big‑wave surfing and the pioneers who risked everything. Celebrated for its storytelling and visuals.

5. Chasing Mavericks (2012)
Based on the true story of Jay Moriarity. Inspirational, emotional, and visually stunning — perfect for Jimmy’s age group.
Included in top surfing film lists. For: emotional depth, mentorship energy, big‑wave awe

Captures the spiritual side of surfing — perfect for Marion’s quiet mastery. The training montages and ocean cinematography could inspire how you depict her returning to form. Jimmy’s admiration for his mother mirrors the Jay–Frosty dynamic.

6. Blue Crush (2002)
A female‑led surf drama with strong athletic sequences and a vibrant Hawaiian setting. A great tonal match for Marion’s competitive edge. Featured in curated lists of top surf films.

For: female athleticism, competition tension, surf‑culture authenticity. Strong, confident women dominating the waves — very Marion. The competition sequences and beach‑community atmosphere are ideal tonal references. The blend of grit and glamour suits the Cornwall summer circuit.

7. North Shore (1987)
A fun, iconic 80s surf film about a young outsider trying to break into the Hawaiian surf scene. A fan favourite in rankings.

8. Soul Surfer (2011)
The true story of Bethany Hamilton — resilience, courage, and the power of returning to the waves.
Included in top surfing film collections. For: resilience, courage, community. Marion’s return to competition echoes the emotional beats of this film. The supportive family dynamic mirrors the Watsons beautifully.

9. Surf’s Up (2007)
A surprisingly brilliant animated mockumentary about surfing penguins. Funny, heartfelt, and visually gorgeous.
Listed among the best surfing films.

10. Riding Giants (2004)
A deep dive into big‑wave culture, featuring legends like Laird Hamilton. A staple in surf film rankings.
For: mythic scale, ocean power, reverence for the sea. Helps frame Marion not just as a surfer, but as someone in conversation with the ocean. The documentary tone could influence how you describe wave physics and surf culture.

11. Blades of Glory. Not a surf film, but humorous in skating competitions, and sabotaging rivals.

12. Little Miss Sunshine (2006)
For: family road‑trip chaos, humour, heart. Not a surf film, but the tone is spot‑on for the Watsons in Miss Ocean. The Kombi van becomes a character in its own right — just like Miss Ocean.
