DAD'S IDEA FOR A CHAMELEON INVISIBILITY CLOAK
- HERSTMONCEUX VILLAGE, DAY
INT. KITCHEN - DAY
Sunlight streams into the kitchen. JIMMY (12, bright and eager) is meticulously arranging a stack of robot diagrams. TIM (40s, his eyes twinkling with an idea) watches him.
TIM
(A sudden thought)
Hey, Jimmy? I had an idea!
Jimmy looks up, intrigued.
TIM (CONT'D)
Why not give your robot the abilities of a chameleon?
Jimmy's eyes widen. He pauses, his imagination already sparking.
JIMMY
(Excited)
How do I do that, Dad?
TIM
(Tapping his chin thoughtfully)
Hmm, I'm not entirely sure, son. But, you know in the movie 'Predator'? And that James Bond film with Q's invisible Aston Martin Vanquish? What was that one called again...?
Tim snaps his fingers, trying to remember.
TIM (CONT'D)
Oh! I remember now, 'Tomorrow Never Dies,' with Pierce Brosnan!
JIMMY
(Grinning, correcting him gently)
Oh, yeah, Dad! Good movies! But the invisible car one was actually called 'Die Another Day,' with Judi Dench and Halle Berry. A 2002 classic spy movie!
TIM
(Chuckles)
Right you are, my little movie expert! Well, the military has been developing something similar for tanks, called active camouflage, to hide them from infrared light systems. Maybe you can think of how to make that work in the light we can actually see?
JIMMY
(Leaning forward, fascinated)
How did they do it, Dad?
TIM
(Shaking his head)
Oh, no, Jimmy, they haven't fully succeeded yet. It's just a super cool idea they're working on! Though I've seen some amazing demos where tanks are almost invisible to enemy targeting systems. Right now, it's not very practical for smaller objects.
JIMMY
Why's that, Dad?
TIM
(Stretching)
Well, we might need a cup of tea if I'm going to explain that one properly.
JIMMY
(Jumping up, already heading for the kettle)
Okay, Dad, I take the hint!
A moment later, they're sitting at the kitchen table, two steaming mugs of tea between them. Tim takes a long sip.
TIM
(Smiling contentedly)
Mmm. You do make a good cuppa.
Jimmy beams, a proud smile on his face.
TIM (CONT'D)
Alright, so, BAE Systems is a big company that makes fighter jets...
JIMMY
(Nodding enthusiastically)
I know that, Dad!
TIM
(Winking)
Of course, this is your sort of thing! So, imagine a cloaking device that makes a tank almost invisible by masking its infrared signature from enemy eyes. Imagine the advantage on a battlefield if your enemy can't see you with their thermal imaging systems!
Jimmy is completely absorbed, his eyes wide with wonder. This technology sounds incredible!
TIM (CONT'D)
Well, British Aerospace, known as BAE Systems, is investing in a camouflage system called ADAPTIV.
Tim and Jimmy both take another gulp of tea.
JIMMY
(Puzzled)
Why is an aircraft company designing stuff for tanks?
TIM
(Grinning)
Good question, Jimmy! BAE makes a whole lot of stuff! Including the amazing Astute submarine, and the massive Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier – and, yes, fighter jets by the bucket load!
JIMMY
(Awe-struck)
Really?!
TIM
(Nodding playfully)
Really! So, if you'll let me, I'll continue!
Jimmy giggles, eager for more.
TIM (CONT'D)
This camouflage system is like a honeycomb of cells that covers most of an armored vehicle. The cells are cooled or heated individually, almost like tiny light bulbs or LEDs, to make a picture! It's a bit like a crude TV screen, but with fewer pixels.
JIMMY
(His face lighting up)
So, it's a bit like a chameleon? The vehicle can mimic its surroundings?
TIM
(Beaming)
Exactly! It can even copy truck shapes from a built-in image bank. And here's the clever bit: the vehicle can also operate like a giant neon sign by flashing text messages or patterns, so friendly forces can recognize it!
JIMMY
(A soft gasp)
Cool!
TIM
(Continuing, caught up in the magic of the idea)
Peacekeeping operations often happen in deserts, forests, and towns, all in the same day. ADAPTIV shields huge military vehicles from detection by mimicking the surrounding temperature. It can even make a tank look like other objects, such as a cow, a car, bushes, or even rocks! Simply by switching on and off the right cells!
JIMMY
(Nodding excitedly)
Okay, Dad, I get it!
But Tim is in full "idea-selling" mode, practically bouncing with enthusiasm.
TIM
(Winking playfully)
Hey, let me finish, son, I know a bit about this!
TIM (CONT'D)
ADAPTIV was patented in Sweden. BAE Systems worked with the Swedish Defence Material Administration to make it work for land vehicles. It took three years of research and seven clever people to make it a reality!
Jimmy's excitement deflates just a tiny bit.
JIMMY
But, Dad, I don't have three years! It's less than three months to Christmas! And what is a patent, for goodness sake? No, don't tell me, I have a vague idea...
TIM
(Smiling reassuringly)
Don't worry, son. That's for another time, when you're a bit older.
Jimmy files these incredible ideas away in his mind. He has a sneaky suspicion his laptop is being watched, with all the hacking attempts and trackers he's noticed. So, he decides to keep his developing code and designs offline, using an older machine without Wi-Fi for his secret robot work.
The chameleon idea is now firmly planted in his imagination, growing like a magical seed. Over the next few weeks, Jimmy spends countless hours pondering how to give his Dinobot its own special kind of invisibility cloak, even dreaming of ways to confuse overhead radar and satellite GPS tracking with bogus or ghost signals.
