SUSSEX
VILLAGE - DAD BUILDS JIMMY A SHED WORKSHOP IN THEIR BACK GARDEN
INT. KITCHEN - DAY
Sunlight streams into the cheerful kitchen. MARION (40s, warm, artistic) is wiping down the counter. TIM (40s, practical, with a twinkle in his eye) sits at the table, lost in thought.
TIM
(A thoughtful hum)
Marion?
MARION
(Without looking up, knowing that tone)
Yes, Timothy?
TIM
(Rubbing his chin)
I've been thinking about Jimmy's project.
Marion freezes, a tiny worry knotting in her stomach. Had he changed his mind?
MARION
(Carefully)
Yes, darling?
TIM
That robot is going to be enormous.
Marion's heart sinks. This wasn't good.
MARION
(A tentative "uh-huh")
Uh-huh.
TIM
Where's he going to work on it? It'll be way too big for his bedroom, even partially assembled.
MARION
(Another "uh-huh," still wary)
Uh-huh.
TIM
And too big for the garage.
MARION
(Eyes widening as a realization dawns)
Oh.
A long, silent moment hangs in the air. Marion suddenly realizes Tim is right, and she hadn't thought of it. Tim watches her, trying to gauge her reaction.
Marion moves to the kettle and switches it on, reaching for mugs. Tim watches nervously, wondering how to break the silence.
MARION
(Sweetly)
Would you like a cup of tea, or coffee, darling?
TIM
(A sigh of relief, he knows this signal!)
I could murder an Earl Grey, thank you, sweetie.
Marion puts a teabag in Tim's mug. She needs a good, strong coffee for herself.
TIM (CONT'D)
(Taking the plunge)
So, I was wondering how you might feel if I... if we... built a shed in the back garden?
MARION
(Turning, surprised)
For Jimmy?
TIM
(Casually)
Yes. What do you think? It's only an idea.
Marion's face breaks into a radiant smile. The worry melts away.
MARION
(Beaming, a tear glinting)
Timothy, it's an exquisite idea! I thought you might be having second thoughts!
TIM
(Pulling her into a hug, relief washing over him)
Second thoughts? Are you crazy? It's Jimmy's best idea to date!
They hug tightly, Marion wiping a happy tear, Tim exhaling a breath he didn't realize he'd been holding. He didn't want to upset her precious garden.
EXT. JIMMY'S BEDROOM - NIGHT
Jimmy is sound asleep, utterly exhausted from his day of digital shopping. He's completely unaware of the wonderful surprise brewing downstairs.
INT. KITCHEN - NIGHT
Later that night, Marion and Tim are sneaking up the stairs, hand-in-hand, giggling like naughty children, carefully dodging creaky floorboards.
TIM
(Whispering)
Shall we keep this a surprise?
MARION
(Whispering back)
And pray tell, how do we achieve that?
TIM
(Chuckles)
No, okay, stupid idea.
INT. KITCHEN - DAWN
The next morning. Jimmy is already off on his paper round. Tim, still in his pajamas, slides out of bed silently, leaving Marion sleeping peacefully.
Down in the kitchen, Tim, barefoot and in pajamas, is sketching furiously on a huge A3 art pad. He shivers, then pulls on a thick woolly jumper and some fur-lined boots.
TIM
(To himself, sighing contentedly)
Mmm, that's better.
Soon, Tim has a detailed drawing of the shed, complete with shelves and a clever collapsible workbench. He draws the Hexapod to scale within the workshop, his eyes widening.
TIM (CONT'D)
(Muttering to himself)
Whoa. Marion's right. It'll have to be bigger than I thought. Or we'll be tripping over that robot!
Marion, in her dressing gown, tiptoes into the kitchen. She sees Tim, engrossed in his drawing.
MARION
(Brushing past him, kissing his head)
That's nice, dear. Nice and spacious. Is that the robot to scale?
TIM
(Looking up, blowing her a kiss)
Tea for me too, I think!
Marion sits down, moving her chair closer to examine the drawing.
MARION
(Admiringly)
I love it! It's like a small log cabin. Can we afford it?
TIM
(A thoughtful frown)
I'm not sure yet. But we can plan it all out. Maybe get some help to bolt the walls and roof together.
MARION
(Tapping her chin, in thinking mode)
You know, they sell sheds and install them for you.
TIM
(Shaking his head)
Yes, I've checked them out. Fifteen to twenty thousand pounds! And still not quite sturdy enough, or large enough for what Jimmy needs.
MARION
(A little gasp)
Oh dear! The workshop is more than the robot!
TIM
(Nodding)
Many times. But I have an idea. I could build it myself! I'm good with wood, and I have a couple of chippy friends in the village. We just need the materials at the right price.
MARION
(Concerned)
Are you sure, Tim? Do you have the time?
TIM
(Determined)
I'm going to make the time. If our son wants to make a go of this, we should help him!
MARION
(Jumping up, eyes sparkling)
I'll help! I've done a lot of craft design in wood. How hard can it be?
Tim wisely holds his tongue, grateful for her enthusiasm.
TIM
(Smiling)
If you're up for this, I'll get some timber quotes.
MARION
(Grinning)
Darling, I am, as you say, up for it! Show me the way!
EXT. BACK GARDEN - DAYS LATER
The back garden is now a bustling construction site. The vegetable patch has vanished, replaced by a large, level concrete base. MARION, surprisingly adept, is operating a DeWalt circular saw with precision. TIM is carefully marking timbers. JIMMY (whenever he's not at school or on his paper round) is eagerly assisting.
TIM
(Watching Marion cut)
You've got a natural talent for this, Marion! Careful of splinters!
MARION
(Her face flushed with happy exertion)
It's fun! I feel like a real handywoman!
Tim and Jimmy begin assembling the wooden framework. They use clamps, drills, and enormous timber-lock screws. Jimmy carries timbers, Tim helps toe-fix them.
TIM
(As he works)
Can't be too careful!
MARION
(Chuckling)
Belt and braces!
Marion watches her husband and son, a wave of pride washing over her.
MARION (CONT'D)
You two make a great team!
TIM
(Smiling)
We do! It's good to have the whole family involved in this project.
As the day progresses, the workshop takes shape, its sturdy wooden skeleton rising majestically.
MARION
(Stepping back, amazed)
I can't believe we've gotten this far! This is going to be a fantastic workshop!
Tim and Jimmy share a satisfied glance.
TIM
(Wiping his brow)
It's going to be a workshop worthy of a brilliant young inventor!
MARION
(Striking a playful pose with her DeWalt power driver)
I feel like a pioneer in the Wild West!
INT. FRONT PORCH - A FEW DAYS LATER
A knock on the door. Marion answers to find two official-looking GENTLEMEN in suits, holding up ID badges.
GENTLEMAN 1
(Stiffly)
Good morning, Mrs. Watson. We've received complaints from neighbors that building works are underway, and our records indicate there may not be a valid consent in place.
MARION
(Composed, though her internal alarm bells ring)
You are from the council, I take it? Wealden District
Council?
GENTLEMAN 2
Yes, Mrs. Watson. Might we take a look in your back garden?
Marion's mind races. She subtly switches on her phone's recorder and ensures the backyard CCTV is active.
MARION
(A polite but firm smile)
This way, gentlemen. Might I inquire as to who has complained?
GENTLEMAN 1
We're afraid we cannot reveal the identity of informants.
MARION
(Eyebrow raised)
Informants! Is this a criminal matter? Where are the police and your authorizations?
The officers shift awkwardly.
GENTLEMAN 2
Er, we have our ID badges.
MARION
(Sweetly)
Strange, we received no formal notification. This is a residential property, as you can see. And a garden shed or garage is a permitted development. Indeed, the enlargement of a house by a considerable amount does not need planning permission. Are you familiar with the relevant Orders?
The officers look distinctly uncomfortable.
GENTLEMAN 1
Well, Mrs. Watson, there was some suggestion as to a commercial enterprise. It's a rather large footprint.
MARION
(Her voice hardening slightly)
How so? The work we are doing is not completed. So, how can there be any commercial use? Was that fly-by the other day connected with this visit? I noticed a light aircraft circling, and then a helicopter.
The officers realize they've been caught.
GENTLEMAN 2
(Embarrassed)
We may have made a mistake, Mrs. Watson. Very sorry to have troubled you.
They quickly retreat. Marion closes the door, turns off her recorder, and makes a mental note to tell Tim later, when he's in a good mood.
EXT. BACK GARDEN - WEEKS LATER
The magnificent workshop stands proudly at the bottom of the garden. It's much larger than a typical shed, a sturdy, insulated structure with a proper roof, windows, and even a small sink and toilet, as Marion had insisted!
Tim is attaching an enormous padlock to the heavy wooden doors.
MARION
(Admiringly)
That's a big padlock, Tim!
TIM
(Grinning)
Found the biggest one Screwfix stocked! So Jimmy can work in private, secure in the knowledge his investment is safe.
MARION
(Thoughtfully)
Now, what about tools, dear?
TIM
(Proudly)
Don't know what you think, but he can use my R-Tech
255S.
MARION
(Perplexed)
Which is...?
TIM
(Chuckles)
Oh, a 250 amp welder that runs on single phase. A DC multi-purpose inverter for TIG, MIG, and stick
welding.
MARION
(Even more perplexed)
Which is...?
TIM
(Grinning, simplifying)
Okay, a versatile bit of kit to join all kinds of metals! Ideal for making
steel frames and
alloy legs. And we already have it, so no more cost!
MARION
(Eyes wide)
Will Jimmy know how to use it?
TIM
I can teach him! He's seen me working on your beloved camper,
welding in new panels and chassis parts. They don't teach that at school until much later. More of a technical college thing.
MARION
(Leaning in, touched)
Darling, you are wonderful.
TIM
(Winking)
I know.
MARION
(Playfully)
Can you teach me too?
Tim laughs, pulling her into a loving hug. The workshop, a testament to their family's love and ingenuity, stands ready for Jimmy's magical
Dinobot.
