SCENE
- A SLEEPY VILLAGE IN SUSSEX, ENGLAND
A quiet, suburban street. Christmas lights twinkle. Snow gently falls. JIMMY (12), bundled in a winter coat, stands alone in the backyard, looking up at the starry sky. He crosses his fingers.
JIMMY (V.O.)
New Year's resolution early... work harder, save money... but it felt like a Christmas wish.
JIMMY
Hello, Father Christmas... I need your help. If I’m good, all year... work hard at school... can you help me build my dream robot? My friend for life?
INT. SANTA'S WORKSHOP - NORTH POLE - NIGHT
A vast, bustling workshop filled with ELVES. GREAT PAPA ELF, a wise, older elf, speaks into a Tannoys system.
GREAT PAPA ELF
Santa, we have a unique request.
SANTA (O.S.)
What is it, Papa?
INT. SANTA'S OFFICE - CONTINUOUS
SANTA, a jovial, but thoughtful man, sits at a large desk. GREAT PAPA ELF enters, holding a file.
SANTA
Jimmy Watson. Good boy?
GREAT PAPA ELF
His file... Special Considerations desk, European workshop.
Santa opens the file, they both read.
SANTA
Ho, ho, ho... he seems to be doing fine.
GREAT PAPA ELF
He asked for help.
SANTA
His parents are supportive.
GREAT PAPA ELF
But if he keeps his word...
SANTA
Agreed. We’ll watch him. No special treatment.
MONTAGE
Quick cuts showing JIMMY:
- Doing his paper round, early mornings.
- Saving money in a jar.
- Helping with chores around the house.
- Focusing intently on his schoolwork.
INT. SCHOOL HALLWAY - DAY (NINE MONTHS LATER)
MARION (Jimmy’s mother) is on a cell phone, looking concerned.
MARION
Hello, Mrs. Watson. I wanted to speak to Mr. Rippengal or Mr. Henderson.
VOICE (O.S.)
One moment Mrs. Watson.
INT. PHYSICS CLASSROOM - CONTINUOUS
MR. HENDERSON (a young, enthusiastic teacher) speaks into the phone.
MR. HENDERSON
Mrs. Watson, Henderson here. Jimmy is one of our best.
MARION (V.O.)
He’s being so good at home.
MR. HENDERSON
We were saying the same about his schoolwork. His physics is astonishing, his programming...
MARION (V.O.)
How so?
MR. HENDERSON
He’s teaching us. Genius level.
Marion is shocked, a small tear forms in her eye.
INT. WATSON KITCHEN - EVENING
Marion and Jimmy eat dinner.
MARION
Are you enjoying school?
JIMMY
Yes, Mum. Especially robotics.
MARION
What are you working on?
JIMMY
AI, code sequences, learning potential.
MARION
Do your teachers understand?
Jimmy blushes.
JIMMY
I’m a bit ahead. But they’re helping.
MARION
What’s the goal?
Jimmy looks down.
JIMMY
I don’t know. Advanced robotics. I hope it’s okay.
Marion smiles, and places her hand over his.
MARION
It is. Follow your instincts.
Jimmy hugs his mother tightly.
INT. JIMMY’S BEDROOM - NIGHT
Jimmy works at his computer, surrounded by circuit boards and tools. He writes in a notebook, filled with complex diagrams and code.
JIMMY (V.O.)
I kept working. Uncomplicated code, faster machines, more energy saved. It was all in my notebook.
FADE OUT.
