SCENE 3 - MORE MONEY IN THE BOX THAN EXPECTED

INT. GARNER'S NEWSAGENTS - SATURDAY MORNING

MR. GARNER, a very tall, kindly man in his late 50s, stands behind the counter. JIMMY WATSON (12), bright-eyed and energetic, approaches with an empty canvas bag. The bag has "GARNER'S FOR NEWS" printed on the side.

Mr. Garner hands Jimmy a small brown wages envelope. Jimmy tears it open eagerly, his eyes widening.

Jimmy beams, a huge grin spreading across his face.

Jimmy hands the empty canvas bag back to Mr. Garner.

Mr. Garner watches Jimmy scuttle out of the shop, still grinning. He smiles to himself.

EXT. STREET - SATURDAY MORNING

Jimmy practically skips down the street, clutching his wages envelope.

INT. WATSON HOUSE - UPSTAIRS BEDROOM - SATURDAY MORNING

Jimmy cautiously opens his bedroom door, peeking out into the hallway. He then checks the other rooms upstairs, then downstairs. Satisfied he's alone, he rushes back to his room.

INT. WATSON HOUSE - UPSTAIRS BEDROOM - CONTINUOUS

Jimmy kneels by a corner of his room and carefully peels back the edge of the carpet. He reaches under the floorboards.

His hand closes on a small metal money box. He pulls it out and takes a key from a chain around his neck, opening the lock. He opens the box slowly, like revealing a treasure.

INT. WATSON HOUSE - UPSTAIRS BEDROOM - CONTINUOUS

Jimmy carefully removes the banknotes from the box and lays them out on the carpet in neat piles.

Jimmy looks confused.

He adds the thirty-five pounds from his paper round to the piles. He counts again, very carefully.

Jimmy stares at the money, utterly bewildered, then a look of pure joy spreads across his face.

He quickly puts the money back in the box, returns it to its hiding place under the floorboards, and smooths the carpet back into place. Then, he jumps up and down, punching the air.

INT. WATSON HOUSE - DOWNSTAIRS - SATURDAY MORNING

MARION WATSON (40s), Jimmy's mother, is in the kitchen. She hears the thumping and Jimmy's shout from upstairs. She smiles, pleased. She opens and closes the back door, making it bang shut loudly.

INT. WATSON HOUSE - STAIRS - SATURDAY MORNING

Jimmy hears the door and his mother's voice. He freezes for a moment, then rushes out of his room.

INT. WATSON HOUSE - DOWNSTAIRS - CONTINUOUS

Jimmy bounds down the stairs and throws himself at Marion, giving her a huge hug.

Jimmy whoops and charges back upstairs. Marion watches him go, shaking her head and laughing softly.
