THE ROAD TO THE HIGHLANDS - THE ROOF RACK RIDDLE
FADE IN:
EXT. HERSTMONCEUX VILLAGE – NIGHT
A crisp winter night. The air glitters with frost. The Sussex
Downs rise like sleeping giants beneath a sky of polished stars.
A faint glow spills from a garden workshop behind the Watson home.
INT. GARDEN WORKSHOP – CONTINUOUS
Tools hang neatly on the walls. Strange blueprints and half‑finished gadgets clutter the benches.
JIMMY WATSON, 12, bright‑eyed and determined, whispers conspiratorially to a towering robotic creature beside him.
JIMMY
(whispering, breath fogging)
Now remember the rules, Anthony. Mum said this is a family holiday. No projects, no coding… and definitely no giant robotic Australian Bulldog Ants.
ANTHONY, the Dinobot — iridescent blue‑black armour, multifaceted amber eyes — tilts his head thoughtfully. His voice hums like a cello made of
electricity.
ANTHONY
Observation: I am a member of the family, Jimmy. My database defines “family” as a social unit living together. Also, my sensors indicate
Scotland
contains 31,460 freshwater lochs. Probability of needing a Dinobot for aquatic exploration: 98.4%.
Jimmy grins, patting Anthony’s metallic thorax.
JIMMY
I knew you’d say that. But you’ve got to be a stowaway. Dormant Cargo protocol. Can you do it?
ANTHONY
Initiating “Luggage Mode.”
A series of elegant whirs, clicks, and mechanical folds. Anthony collapses in on himself like a transforming puzzle box — legs tucking, mandibles retracting, abdomen compressing — until he becomes a sleek, rectangular block of advanced tech.
Jimmy strains to lift him — but Anthony subtly activates internal grav‑levelers, becoming light as a suitcase.
EXT. WATSON DRIVEWAY – MOMENTS LATER
The Volkswagen Kombi camper van, light and dark blue, sits under a sheen of frost.
Jimmy hauls Anthony onto the roof rack, aided by a discreet burst from Anthony’s hidden thrusters.
JIMMY
Perfect. Now… cloaking on.
A ripple passes over Anthony — like moonlight bending. He vanishes into a shimmering distortion.
Jimmy throws a heavy frost‑proof tarp over the “empty” space and ties it down with sailor‑worthy knots.
JIMMY
Hold that position. And keep your heaters low. No turning into a giant ice cube.
A tiny, muffled voice from beneath the tarp:
ANTHONY (O.S.)
Scanning… Temperature regulated. Stealth maintained. I shall remain as silent as a Scottish moss-grown stone.
Jimmy smiles, satisfied.
FADE TO:
EXT. WATSON HOUSE – DAWN
The world is white with hoarfrost. Sunlight glitters across the village.
TIM WATSON, cheerful and slightly chaotic, does a proud Dad‑Dance around the Kombi, checking tyres and
oil with exaggerated seriousness.
TIM
Tires good… oil’s golden. Right then! Let’s get this show on the road!
MARION WATSON emerges, wrapped in a scarf long enough to tow a tractor. She eyes the bulky tarp on the roof rack.
MARION
That’s a lot of gear, Jimmy. I thought we agreed on light packing?
Jimmy freezes. A bead of sweat forms despite the cold.
JIMMY
It’s… mostly blankets. And, um… heavy‑duty tarps. In case it rains.
Marion softens, ruffling his hair.
MARION
You’re a thoughtful lad. And what’s got you grinning like a Cheshire cat?
Jimmy shrugs, trying to look innocent.
JIMMY
Just excited to see Cousin Rhona. I’ve got a feeling this trip’s going to be unforgettable.
TIM
Too right! Destination: Drumnadrochit! Loch Ness, here we come!
Tim slides the Kombi’s side door shut with a satisfying
THUNK.
INT. KOMBI CAMPER VAN – CONTINUOUS
The engine sputters, coughs, then bursts into a friendly pop‑pop‑VROOM.
Jimmy glances upward. He can’t see Anthony — but he feels a faint vibration through the chassis. A secret heartbeat.
EXT. HERSTMONCEUX
– CONTINUOUS
The Kombi rolls down the frosty lane, exhaust puffing like a dragon waking from sleep.
Above, hidden beneath tarp and cloaking field, Anthony rides silently — the first piece of a mystery that will follow them all the way to the Highlands.
FADE OUT.

PLOT
OUTLINE:
Having
enjoyed a wicked Christmas in Herstmonceux, Jimmy's mum, Marion and dad,
Tim, decide to take a Scottish vacation to visit Marion's cousin, near Loch Ness. A road trip in her trusty
Volkswagen Kombi Camper
van. They set off just after Boxing Day, to arrive before New Year's Eve, for a reunion, having fitted winter tyres and installed a heater in the VW. They make it up the M1 to Edinburgh, and M90 to Inverness, then back down to Drumnadrochit. Where 'Rhona MacLeod' lives
alongside Loch Ness.
Anthony, travels on the roof-rack, using his cloak of invisibility to remain undetected. The trip is uneventful, the VW performing well, even in a snowy
blizzard, that soon clears near the famous Loch. It turns out that Rhona is a scientist. She has been studying the Loch for signs of the Monster of legend. Once reunited and settled in, Rohna tells that she has photographed the elusive monster, but nobody believes her. A famous debunker, 'Angus Campbell', discredits Rhona publicly. Calling her crazy, to even think such a legend could have any roots in reality.
Anthony, the Magic Dinobot, who is not supposed to be on this trip, spots the monster in the Loch through a mist, with his incredible AI sensors, telling Jimmy, secretly. Jimmy keeps this to himself. Marion and Tim support Rhona
in principle, but are somewhat skeptical. Although, they love the idea of the legend, having been brought up on the story. Then Marion realised that
Anthony has been a passenger, and scolds Jimmy. Then forgives him, when Jimmy reveals that the dinobot has seen the monster.
Tim does not believe the dinobot, but when out on the banks of the Loch, in the mist, the monster reveals itself to Antony, attempting to communicate with the
AI robot, and they kind of speak to each other, the dinobot deciphering the
monsters grunts and songs. Marion, Tim and Jimmy see this, and are spellbound, but know nobody will believe them. So, agree to keep it a secret.
Then, an investigative reporter,
Charley
Temple, visits to report on the sighting, for Jill
Bird, at the BBC World News. There is enough evidence to keep the legend alive, and Charley, a fan of Jimmy from when he won a coding prize for his work on
AI, tends to believe him and Rhona, keeping the legend alive. Charley spots the dinobot when creeping around at night, but decides to keep this to herself, to protect Jimmy and Rhona. Then, Angus Campbell's boat is found out on the Loch, with claw marks, and
harpoons onboard, but no Angus. His body is never found. This is reported on by Jill Bird at the BBC and it goes viral, the mystery remaining a mystery. The family return home safely, vowing to keep their encounter with the monster a secret.
