THE SHADOW ON THE LOCH

The heavens did not merely open; they fractured. As Hamish’s wooden boat surged toward the harsh, artificial glare of the spotlight, the Highland sky transformed into a swirling cauldron of charcoal and violet. The mist, once a gentle veil, thickened into a suffocating fog that seemed to pulse with a life of its own.

From the heart of the gloom came a voice, ragged and raw with obsession. "Show yerself, ya slimy beastie! Tonight is the night the world laughs at ye!"

Angus Campbell stood at the prow of his electric drifter, a silhouette of madness etched against the gray. He looked less like a modern man and more like a ghost of a vengeful whaling skipper from centuries past, his harpoon held aloft like a scepter of doom.

CRACK—BOOM.

A fork of lightning split the sky, illuminating the Loch in a strobe-light flash of silver. For a heartbeat, the water looked like solid glass, then the thunder hit, a physical weight that made the wooden boat shudder to its ribs.

"Hold fast!" Hamish roared over the rising gale, his massive hands white-knuckled on the tiller. "The Loch’s in a foul mood tonight, and she doesna’ take kindly to insults!"

Anthony’s metallic frame began to hum, a fierce, pulsing red light emanating from his sensors. “Atmospheric instability increasing, Jimmy. Electrical discharge imminent. My internal gyroscopes are struggling to compensate for the kinetic energy of the waves.”

Another bolt of lightning speared the surface of the water so close that the smell of ozone filled their lungs. Marion lunged for the gunwale, her knuckles as pale as the foam. "Merciful heavens! It’s like the world is trying to swallow us whole!"

"Come out, ye cowardly serpent!" Angus’s voice bellowed across the void, distorted by the wind. "Face me! Face yer reckoning!"

Charley gripped the side of the boat, her eyes narrowed. "He’s completely lost it. He’s gone full Captain Ahab."

"He’s provoking her," Rhona added, her voice tight with a scientist’s dread. "He’s treating a living miracle like a common predator. He doesn't understand that the Loch and the Legend are one and the same."

Jimmy stood at the bow, his blood boiling with a protective fire that chased away the Highland chill. "We’re not letting him hurt her!" he shouted into the wind. "Anthony, can you jam his spotlight? Can you do anything?"

Across the churning water, Angus was a jagged shadow. Lightning flashed behind him, turning his soaked tweed jacket into a tattered cape. He looked deranged, screaming curses into the storm as the waves slammed into his hull. The electric drifter lurched violently, nearly pitching him into the freezing depths, but he clung to the harpoon launcher with a terrifying, singular focus.

Suddenly, Anthony emitted a piercing, high-pitched alarm tone. “Warning. Biological Entity in distress. Hunter vessel approaching critical proximity. The target’s heart rate is spiking to dangerous levels.”

A massive, rolling ripple moved beneath Hamish’s boat—a surge of water so powerful it nearly capsized them. It wasn't a wave caused by the wind; it was the wake of something enormous moving in a blind panic.

"She’s terrified," Marion whispered, her heart breaking for the creature.

"And he’s driving her straight into the shallows!" Tim cried, pointing toward the jagged rocks of the shoreline that appeared and disappeared through the shifting fog. "She’ll beach herself trying to get away from that noise!"

Another flash of lightning—blinding and blue—tore through the dark. For one split second, the veil was lifted. Beneath the surface, a colossal, graceful shadow was visible, its long neck coiled in a defensive posture, its massive flippers churning the silt.

Jimmy gasped, his breath catching in his throat. "She’s right there. She’s trying to hide, but there’s nowhere left to go."

Hamish’s face was grim, his eyes reflecting the storm. "Aye. And the Loch is rising to meet the challenge. It’s a battle of wills now, lad."

Angus raises a disruptor device — a crude, illegal thing wired together with spite and desperation. He flicks a switch. A shrill, agonizing whine tears through the air. The Loch convulses.

"Aye! Feel that, beastie? That’s me knockin’ on yer door!"

In the Watson's boat, everyone claps hands over their ears. Anthony’s glow spikes to blinding red.

"Emergency protocol engaged. Jimmy — permission to shield the Biological Entity?" Jimmy nods without hesitation. "Do it!"

Anthony leaps from the bow — a streak of blue‑white light — and dives into the water. A shockwave of energy ripples outward, muffling the disruptor’s scream. Rhona was impressed. "He’s dampening the signal!" "Buying her time!" Charley enjoined.

The storm intensifies. Wind howls. Rain lashes sideways. Angus fights the tiller, screaming into the void. "Ye can’t hide from me! I’ll have ye! I’ll—" A monstrous wave rises behind him — towering, black, alive. For the first time, Angus falters.

He whispers, "…oh no." The wave crashes over the Drifter, swallowing it whole. The spotlight flickers — then vanishes.

The group watches in stunned silence as the storm engulfs Angus’s vessel. "Dear Lord…" Marion is stunned. "Is he…?" Tim was also in shock. "Alive?" Rounded Hamish. "Hard to say. But the Loch’s given him a warnin’."

Jimmy grips the gunwale, eyes scanning the boiling water. "We need to find Anthony. And Nessie. Lightning flashes again — and deep below, a faint blue glow pulses in the darkness. "There! He’s signaling!" Their boat creeps forward into the storm.

The mist surged onwards, swallowing Angus and his vessel once more. The 'Keepers' watch on as the mist spread toward them.

PLOT OUTLINE:

Having enjoyed a wicked Christmas in Herstmonceux, Jimmy's mum, Marion and dad, Tim, decide to take a Scottish vacation to visit Marion's cousin, near Loch Ness. A road trip in her trusty Volkswagen Kombi Camper van. They set off just after Boxing Day, to arrive before New Year's Eve, for a reunion, having fitted winter tyres and installed a heater in the VW. They make it up the M1 to Edinburgh, and M90 to Inverness, then back down to Drumnadrochit. Where 'Rhona MacLeod' lives alongside Loch Ness.

Anthony, travels on the roof-rack, using his cloak of invisibility to remain undetected. The trip is uneventful, the VW performing well, even in a snowy blizzard, that soon clears near the famous Loch. It turns out that Rhona is a scientist. She has been studying the Loch for signs of the Monster of legend. Once reunited and settled in, Rohna tells that she has photographed the elusive monster, but nobody believes her. A famous debunker, 'Angus Campbell', discredits Rhona publicly. Calling her crazy, to even think such a legend could have any roots in reality. Anthony, the Magic Dinobot, who is not supposed to be on this trip, spots the monster in the Loch through a mist, with his incredible AI sensors, telling Jimmy, secretly. Jimmy keeps this to himself. Marion and Tim support Rhona in principle, but are somewhat skeptical. Although, they love the idea of the legend, having been brought up on the story. Then Marion realised that Anthony has been a passenger, and scolds Jimmy. Then forgives him, when Jimmy reveals that the dinobot has seen the monster.

Tim does not believe the dinobot, but when out on the banks of the Loch, in the mist, the monster reveals itself to Antony, attempting to communicate with the AI robot, and they kind of speak to each other, the dinobot deciphering the monsters grunts and songs. Marion, Tim and Jimmy see this, and are spellbound, but know nobody will believe them. So, agree to keep it a secret.

Then, an investigative reporter, Charley Temple, visits to report on the sighting, for Jill Bird, at the BBC World News. There is enough evidence to keep the legend alive, and Charley, a fan of Jimmy from when he won a coding prize for his work on AI, tends to believe him and Rhona, keeping the legend alive. Charley spots the dinobot when creeping around at night, but decides to keep this to herself, to protect Jimmy and Rhona. Then, Angus Campbell's boat is found out on the Loch, with claw marks, and harpoons onboard, but no Angus. His body is never found. This is reported on by Jill Bird at the BBC and it goes viral, the mystery remaining a mystery. The family return home safely, vowing to keep their encounter with the monster a secret.
