ROAD TO THE HIGHLANDS - PING IN THE DARK

The night had settled over the Great Glen like a heavy, velvet curtain. Inside the cottage, the air was thick with the scent of woodsmoke and the rhythmic thud-thud of suitcases being dragged across floorboards. But for Jimmy, every sound from outside—the whistle of the wind through the eaves or the occasional groan of Miss Ocean’s metal cooling—sounded like a potential disaster.

Jimmy stood by the frost-etched window, pretending to be fascinated by a spiderweb in the corner. He had to be careful. His father, Tim, might have been wearing a cozy Highland sweater and helping Marion with the bedding, but underneath that "Dad" exterior was a General in the British Army. Tim Watson was trained in Military Intelligence; he could spot a "deviation from the norm" at five hundred yards, and Jimmy’s current "norm" was looking suspiciously like a boy holding his breath.

Suddenly, Jimmy’s wrist gave a sharp, rhythmic pulse. It wasn't just a notification; it was a haptic vibration that felt like a tiny hammer tapping on his bone. He ducked his head, looking at the display on his watch.

ANTHONY: > “Warning. Long-range bio-scanners have locked onto a signature. Displacement: Immense. Heartbeat: Ancient. Temperature: Sub-thermal. It is... shifting.”

Jimmy’s brow furrowed. He was still a bit foggy from the long drive and the heavy Haggis dinner. He tapped a quick reply into the interface.

JIMMY: > What does that mean? Is it a whale?

The response was almost instantaneous.

ANTHONY: > “Negative. Signature indicates a freshwater lifeform. Anatomical markers suggest a morphology similar to a Plesiosaur. Jimmy... it is looking back at me.”

Jimmy felt as if someone had dropped a cube of ice down the back of his neck. "No," he whispered involuntarily. "It can't be."

Down in the inky, peat-stained depths of the Loch, the creature felt the pulse. It wasn't the clumsy, aggressive clack-clack of Rhona’s sonar, which it had spent decades avoiding. This was different. It was a digital song, a high-frequency hum that felt... curious. Friendly.

The monster tilted its long, serpentine neck, its great flippers pushing against the freezing current. It opened its mouth and let out a low, thrumming vibration—a sub-sonic echo that bounced off the Loch’s walls and traveled straight up through the rock, through the wheels of the VW Kombi, and into Anthony’s sensor-legs.

ANTHONY:

“Jimmy! The creature is responding. It is using a patterned frequency. It is... attempting to communicate. Logic centers overwhelmed. What do we do?”

Jimmy’s heart was pounding against his ribs like a trapped bird. His face had turned a bright, alarming shade of crimson. He wanted to scream, to run into the kitchen and tell his parents that the legend was real, that Anthony had found it! But he stopped. If he told them, he’d have to admit the Dinobot was on the roof. Anthony would be confiscated, the Loch would be swarming with military subs, and the "ancient heartbeat" would be in danger.

"Jimmy? Are you quite alright, love?"

He jumped nearly a foot into the air. Marion was standing in the doorway, a stack of towels in her arms, looking at him with genuine concern. "Your face is like a beetroot, son. You're not coming down with something, are you?"

Jimmy forced a huge, slightly manic smile onto his face. He scrambled across the room and threw his arms around his mother’s waist, burying his red face in her sweater.

"I'm fine, Mum! Just excited! It’s the mountain air, I think. And the Haggis!"

Tim appeared behind her, wiping his hands on a rag. He squinted at Jimmy, his "Intelligence Officer" eyes scanning for any signs of a lie. "You’ve got a lot of energy for a boy who’s been in a van for ten hours," he noted, though his voice was soft.

Jimmy let go of his mother and rushed to his father, giving him an equally fierce hug. "I just love it here, Dad! And Auntie Rhona—she’s the coolest person I’ve ever met!"

Tim laughed, the suspicion melting into a warm fatherly glow. "She is a bit of a marvel, isn't she? Right then, off to bed with you. You'll need your strength if we're going down to the shore tomorrow."

"Night, night, Mum! Night, Dad! Love you!"

Jimmy "scuttled" to his room—there was no other word for it—and bolted the door. He leaned against the wood, gasping for air. He looked at the window. It would be so easy to climb out, to run down the gravel path, and see the shimmer of the water for himself. But he knew better.

He tapped a final, urgent message to the roof rack.

JIMMY:

“Do nothing for now. Maintain contact, but do not ping back. We need to stay invisible. I need some sleep. Stay safe, Anthony.”

ANTHONY:

“Compliance, Jimmy. I am watching the water. The Ancient Heartbeat is still there. Goodnight.”

As Jimmy climbed into the heavy wool blankets of his crofter-style bed, he could still feel the faint, rhythmic vibration of the Loch through the floorboards. The legend wasn't just a story anymore. It was a neighbor.

PLOT OUTLINE:

Having enjoyed a wicked Christmas in Herstmonceux, Jimmy's mum, Marion and dad, Tim, decide to take a Scottish vacation to visit Marion's cousin, near Loch Ness. A road trip in her trusty Volkswagen Kombi Camper van. They set off just after Boxing Day, to arrive before New Year's Eve, for a reunion, having fitted winter tyres and installed a heater in the VW. They make it up the M1 to Edinburgh, and M90 to Inverness, then back down to Drumnadrochit. Where 'Rhona MacLeod' lives alongside Loch Ness.

Anthony, travels on the roof-rack, using his cloak of invisibility to remain undetected. The trip is uneventful, the VW performing well, even in a snowy blizzard, that soon clears near the famous Loch. It turns out that Rhona is a scientist. She has been studying the Loch for signs of the Monster of legend. Once reunited and settled in, Rohna tells that she has photographed the elusive monster, but nobody believes her. A famous debunker, 'Angus Campbell', discredits Rhona publicly. Calling her crazy, to even think such a legend could have any roots in reality. Anthony, the Magic Dinobot, who is not supposed to be on this trip, spots the monster in the Loch through a mist, with his incredible AI sensors, telling Jimmy, secretly. Jimmy keeps this to himself. Marion and Tim support Rhona in principle, but are somewhat skeptical. Although, they love the idea of the legend, having been brought up on the story. Then Marion realised that Anthony has been a passenger, and scolds Jimmy. Then forgives him, when Jimmy reveals that the dinobot has seen the monster.

Tim does not believe the dinobot, but when out on the banks of the Loch, in the mist, the monster reveals itself to Antony, attempting to communicate with the AI robot, and they kind of speak to each other, the dinobot deciphering the monsters grunts and songs. Marion, Tim and Jimmy see this, and are spellbound, but know nobody will believe them. So, agree to keep it a secret.

Then, an investigative reporter, Charley Temple, visits to report on the sighting, for Jill Bird, at the BBC World News. There is enough evidence to keep the legend alive, and Charley, a fan of Jimmy from when he won a coding prize for his work on AI, tends to believe him and Rhona, keeping the legend alive. Charley spots the dinobot when creeping around at night, but decides to keep this to herself, to protect Jimmy and Rhona. Then, Angus Campbell's boat is found out on the Loch, with claw marks, and harpoons onboard, but no Angus. His body is never found. This is reported on by Jill Bird at the BBC and it goes viral, the mystery remaining a mystery. The family return home safely, vowing to keep their encounter with the monster a secret.
