THE
UNSPOKEN PACT
As
Charley
Temple
walked toward her car, she paused by the porch, her reporter’s instinct prickling. Out of the corner of her eye, she caught a glint—a flash of iridescent metal, like the leg of a giant, chrome-plated grasshopper, tucked into the shadows of the barn. She blinked, shaking her head. When she looked again, the shadow was empty.
"Imagination," she muttered, though she didn't believe herself for a second. "The Highland air is getting to me."
She thanked the Watson's for their hospitality, her mind already spinning. Instead of heading for a warm bed at the inn, she drove down to the shoreline. She needed to feel the Loch; she needed to understand the "ghost" Rhona was protecting. Pulling into a small, gravelly turnout, she leaned her seat back and drifted into a restless sleep.
Two hours later, a sound pulled her from her dreams—a rhythmic, hollow thwack-thwack-thwack.
"The air-cooled popping of a VW engine," Charley whispered, wide awake in an instant.
"Miss Ocean is on the move."
Without switching on her headlights, Charley steered her car onto the track, following the distant red glow of the van’s taillights. The ride was a bone-rattling gauntlet of potholes and gorse, but she kept pace. When the van finally hissed to a halt near a secluded inlet, Charley slipped out of her car and moved with the silence of a shadow.
Under the silver moonlight, she saw something detach itself from the roof-rack of the van. It didn't fall; it skittered. It was the "metal
ant"—Anthony.
Jimmy,
Marion, and
Rhona followed the machine to the water’s edge like disciples following a small, mechanical prophet.
Then, the sound hit her. It was a haunting, melodic grunt—a vibration so deep it felt like it was coming from the center of the earth. It was whale-song, but ancient, layered with the echoes of a lost world.
Charley crept forward, her heart drumming against her ribs. She peered through the mist, and there she was. A long, graceful neck broke the surface, the water sliding off its dark skin like liquid diamonds.
"Is it a mirage?" Charley breathed.
She moved closer, inching toward the group until she was standing almost directly behind Tim Watson. She could hear Anthony now—a series of rapid-fire digital clicks and chirps. The monster swayed in response, leaning in.
Charley stepped forward, her foot snapping a dry twig.
Tim spun around, his eyes wide. "Good evening, Miss Temple."
The secret was out. Jimmy didn't even look back, his eyes fixed on the water. "Sshhhhh! Don't scare
Nessie!"
Charley stood frozen. If she wrote this, the world would explode. Every scientist, hunter, and tourist on the planet would descend on this spot with cages and tranquilizer guns. Professor MacLeod turned, her face flushed red in the moonlight.
"I told you," Rhona said softly, "that you would need an open mind."
In the water, Anthony waded deeper, his mechanical feelers reaching out to touch the creature’s snout. A massive splash sent a spray of icy water over them all. It was a physical, undeniable touch between two miracles.
"Is that one of yours, Jimmy?" Charley asked, her voice trembling.
"He’s my best friend," Jimmy replied simply.
Rhona stepped toward Charley, her voice low and urgent. "She’s the last of her kind, Charley. Shy, lonely, and hunted. If the world finds her, she becomes a specimen in a tank. A prisoner."
Charley looked at the robot talking to the prehistoric throwback. It was the most beautiful thing she had ever seen—a bridge across time. She realized then that a reporter's job wasn't always to expose the truth; sometimes, it was to protect it.
"I'll say goodnight to you all," Charley said, her voice steadying. "And thank you for being so candid."
"What are you going to write?" Jimmy asked, finally looking at her.
Charley smiled, a sharp, professional glint in her eyes. "I think a piece on the ravings of a borderline lunatic named Angus Campbell would be much more entertaining. The best way to hide a miracle is to make the man hunting it look like a fool."
As she walked back to her car, the Watson family watched her go.
"I have a good feeling about Miss Temple," Rhona confided, letting out a breath she felt she’d been holding for centuries.
"Me too," Jimmy seconded, watching Anthony and Nessie share one last harmonic chirp.
Marion and Tim just looked at each other, stunned into silence for the second time in a week. They had come to Scotland for a road trip, but they had found themselves in the middle of a war for a legend's life—and they had just gained their most powerful ally.

PLOT
OUTLINE:
Having
enjoyed a wicked Christmas in Herstmonceux, Jimmy's mum, Marion and dad,
Tim, decide to take a Scottish vacation to visit Marion's cousin, near Loch Ness. A road trip in her trusty
Volkswagen Kombi Camper
van. They set off just after Boxing Day, to arrive before New Year's Eve, for a reunion, having fitted winter tyres and installed a heater in the VW. They make it up the M1 to Edinburgh, and M90 to Inverness, then back down to Drumnadrochit. Where 'Rhona MacLeod' lives
alongside Loch Ness.
Anthony, travels on the roof-rack, using his cloak of invisibility to remain undetected. The trip is uneventful, the VW performing well, even in a snowy
blizzard, that soon clears near the famous Loch. It turns out that Rhona is a scientist. She has been studying the Loch for signs of the Monster of legend. Once reunited and settled in, Rohna tells that she has photographed the elusive monster, but nobody believes her. A famous debunker, 'Angus Campbell', discredits Rhona publicly. Calling her crazy, to even think such a legend could have any roots in reality.
Anthony, the Magic Dinobot, who is not supposed to be on this trip, spots the monster in the Loch through a mist, with his incredible AI sensors, telling Jimmy, secretly. Jimmy keeps this to himself. Marion and Tim support Rhona
in principle, but are somewhat skeptical. Although, they love the idea of the legend, having been brought up on the story. Then Marion realised that
Anthony has been a passenger, and scolds Jimmy. Then forgives him, when Jimmy reveals that the dinobot has seen the monster.
Tim does not believe the dinobot, but when out on the banks of the Loch, in the mist, the monster reveals itself to Antony, attempting to communicate with the
AI robot, and they kind of speak to each other, the dinobot deciphering the
monsters grunts and songs. Marion, Tim and Jimmy see this, and are spellbound, but know nobody will believe them. So, agree to keep it a secret.
Then, an investigative reporter,
Charley
Temple, visits to report on the sighting, for Jill
Bird, at the BBC World News. There is enough evidence to keep the legend alive, and Charley, a fan of Jimmy from when he won a coding prize for his work on
AI, tends to believe him and Rhona, keeping the legend alive. Charley spots the dinobot when creeping around at night, but decides to keep this to herself, to protect Jimmy and Rhona. Then, Angus Campbell's boat is found out on the Loch, with claw marks, and
harpoons onboard, but no Angus. His body is never found. This is reported on by Jill Bird at the BBC and it goes viral, the mystery remaining a mystery. The family return home safely, vowing to keep their encounter with the monster a secret.
