THE ROAD TO THE HIGHLANDS - THE M1 MIRAGE

The M1 motorway was a long, salt-crusted ribbon stretching north through a landscape that looked like it had been dusted with icing sugar. Inside the Volkswagen Kombi, the air was thick with the scent of peppermint tea and the cozy, mechanical hum of the engine.

"Next stop, Edinburgh," Tim announced cheerfully, his hands steady on the steering wheel as they bypassed the concrete tangle of the M25. "Thank heavens for this heater, eh? Look at that slush out there. It’s a proper winter wonderland, and we’re sitting in here like three peas in a very warm pod."

The "pod" in question was Marion’s pride and joy—an air-cooled bus that felt more like a member of the family than a vehicle. While the snow began to swirl more fiercely near Leeds, the trio sat comfortably in their cabin, blissfully unaware of the minor heart attack occurring several feet above their heads.

On the roof rack, life was considerably less cozy.

Anthony, the Magic Dinobot, was curled into a ball of high-tensile titanium and carbon-fibre, tucked beneath the heavy tarpaulin. Even with his internal thermal regulators clicking away, the biting wind of the M1 was trying its best to turn him into a giant blue popsicle. He was running his "Active Camouflage" at sixty percent power to save energy, which meant he looked less like an ant and more like a patch of hazy, distorted air.

As they breezed toward the A1(M), a sudden, violent gust of wind—the kind that likes to bully smaller cars—lashed across the roof. It caught the edge of the tarpaulin, yanking the yellow ropes taut and flipping the canvas back for a split second.

Behind them, a massive eighteen-wheeler was gaining ground. The driver, a burly man named Big Bill who had seen everything from UFOs to hitchhiking goats in his twenty years on the road, suddenly slammed on his brakes.

Through his windshield, Bill saw the tarp fly up. He expected to see a roof box or a stack of suitcases. Instead, he saw... nothing.

Or rather, he saw a hole in reality. The space beneath the canvas was a shimmering, wobbling mirage that looked like a piece of the gray sky had been folded up and tucked onto the VW’s roof. Then, as quickly as it had happened, the tarp snapped back down, seemingly smoothed out by invisible hands.

"By the stars," Bill breathed, reaching for his radio handset with trembling fingers. "Motorway Police, come in. This is Haulier 4-9. I’ve just seen a... a shifting ghost. On the roof of a blue and white Kombi. It adjusted its own blankets, it did!"

Back at the station, a young Police Constable listened to the frantic report, then slowly turned to his Sergeant, holding the phone away from his ear.

"Sarge, we’ve got another one. Says a ghost is tucking itself into bed on top of a camper van near Leeds."

The Sergeant rolled his eyes. "Tell him ghosts don't exist, and tarpaulins don't have hands. Tell him to pull over at the next services, get a strong coffee, and have a long lie-down. Honestly, the things people see when it starts to snow..."

Inside the Kombi, Jimmy was looking into the wing mirror. He had seen the truck driver’s face—a mask of pure, bug-eyed terror—and he’d seen the man reaching for his radio.

Oh no, Jimmy thought, his heart doing a nervous somersault. Anthony’s been spotted.

He watched as the truck began to slow down, eventually peeling off toward a motorway diner. Jimmy let out a long, slow breath, his fingers uncurling. He felt a sudden, sharp pang of hunger. The sight of the diner made him think of a tiny 'Greasy Spoon' café in Cornwall where he’d once had the best breakfast of his life—sizzling bacon and golden eggs—after a morning watching his Mum surf the Atlantic swells.

Marion, who could read Jimmy’s moods like a favorite book, smiled from the small galley kitchen in the back of the van.

"Anyone like a cup of tea?" she asked, the kettle whistling a friendly tune. "And I’ve got some digestive biscuits. It’s a long way to the border."

"Oh, yes please, Mum," Jimmy said, feeling the warmth of the camper wrap around him.

Tim nodded, eyes fixed on the road as the signs for the North began to fly past. "Tea and biscuits. Perfection. We’ll be in Scotland before the sun goes down."

High above, under the tarp, Anthony sent a tiny, encrypted pulse to Jimmy’s phone. It was a single emoji: a snowflake followed by a thumbs-up. The secret was still safe, even if it was currently a very chilly secret.

CHAPTER 19	SCRIPT 19	Charley’s Final Report – Charley files a story that confirms Rhona’s scientific integrity but leaves the "Monster" in the realm of beautiful uncertainty. She gives Jimmy a knowing wink before she departs.
CHAPTER 20	SCRIPT 20	The Farewell at the Water’s Edge – Anthony and the Monster have one final "conversation." Anthony leaves a small, waterproof beacon on the bed of the Loch—a way for them to "talk" across the miles via satellite.
CHAPTER 21	SCRIPT 21	The Sussex Horizon – The VW Kombi trundles back down the M1. The secret is safe, the family is closer than ever, and on the roof-rack, an invisible Anthony watches the stars, dreaming of the deep water.

Having enjoyed a wicked Christmas in Herstmonceux, Jimmy's mum, Marion and dad, Tim, decide to take a Scottish vacation to visit Marion's cousin, near Loch Ness. A road trip in her trusty Volkswagen Kombi Camper van. They set off just after Boxing Day, to arrive before New Year's Eve, for a reunion, having fitted winter tyres and installed a heater in the VW. They make it up the M1 to Edinburgh, and M90 to Inverness, then back down to Drumnadrochit. Where 'Rhona MacLeod' lives alongside Loch Ness.

Anthony, travels on the roof-rack, using his cloak of invisibility to remain undetected. The trip is uneventful, the VW performing well, even in a snowy blizzard, that soon clears near the famous Loch. It turns out that Rhona is a scientist. She has been studying the Loch for signs of the Monster of legend. Once reunited and settled in, Rohna tells that she has photographed the elusive monster, but nobody believes her. A famous debunker, 'Angus Campbell', discredits Rhona publicly. Calling her crazy, to even think such a legend could have any roots in reality. Anthony, the Magic Dinobot, who is not supposed to be on this trip, spots the monster in the Loch through a mist, with his incredible AI sensors, telling Jimmy, secretly. Jimmy keeps this to himself. Marion and Tim support Rhona in principle, but are somewhat skeptical. Although, they love the idea of the legend, having been brought up on the story. Then Marion realised that Anthony has been a passenger, and scolds Jimmy. Then forgives him, when Jimmy reveals that the dinobot has seen the monster.

Tim does not believe the dinobot, but when out on the banks of the Loch, in the mist, the monster reveals itself to Antony, attempting to communicate with the AI robot, and they kind of speak to each other, the dinobot deciphering the monsters grunts and songs. Marion, Tim and Jimmy see this, and are spellbound, but know nobody will believe them. So, agree to keep it a secret.

Then, an investigative reporter, Charley Temple, visits to report on the sighting, for Jill Bird, at the BBC World News. There is enough evidence to keep the legend alive, and Charley, a fan of Jimmy from when he won a coding prize for his work on AI, tends to believe him and Rhona, keeping the legend alive. Charley spots the dinobot when creeping around at night, but decides to keep this to herself, to protect Jimmy and Rhona. Then, Angus Campbell's boat is found out on the Loch, with claw marks, and harpoons onboard, but no Angus. His body is never found. This is reported on by Jill Bird at the BBC and it goes viral, the mystery remaining a mystery. The family return home safely, vowing to keep their encounter with the monster a secret.
