FAREWELL
AT THE WATER'S EDGE
The morning air smelled of damp pine and woodsmoke as the Watsons packed the last of their bags into the trusty
Volkswagen
camper. The cottage, The Kelpie’s Rest, sat nestled against the hillside like a guardian of the glen, its stone walls holding the echoes of their incredible week.
"Thank you for inviting us into your home, Rhona," Marion said, her voice wavering with an emotion she tried to mask behind a brave smile. "It’s been... well, it’s been more than we ever expected."
Jimmy didn’t bother masking his feelings. He dashed forward, wrapping his arms around his cousin in a squeeze so tight it nearly knocked the wind out of her. Rhona laughed, a bright, clear sound, as she knelt to kiss his forehead.
"My little adventurer," she whispered, smoothing his hair. "Take care on the road. And mind you, don’t go inventing anything smarter than
Anthony. I don’t think the world is quite ready for two of him."
"I won't, Auntie," Jimmy promised, though the mischievous glint in his eye told a very different story.
"Oh, and bye the bye," Rhona added, her eyes drifting toward the massive, camouflaged shape on the roof-rack, "yee canna’ just leave him here with me, can yee?" She was joking, but the longing in her voice was real. She had glimpsed the future, and it was made of chrome and kindness.
The Volkswagen burst into life with a familiar, rhythmic putter. As they drove down the winding dirt track, arms waved madly from every window until the cottage vanished behind a stand of silver birch.
"Mum?" Jimmy asked softly after a few miles.
"I know, Jimmy," Marion replied, already turning the wheel.
"Know what?" Tim asked, looking up from a map. "Aren't we heading for the border?"
"One last stop," Marion said firmly.
They pulled into Whispering Bay, the secluded cove now blessedly empty of flashing bulbs and shouting reporters.
Tim took up his post as lookout, scanning the clifftops like a sentry. Anthony disentangled himself from the roof-rack with practiced, hydraulic grace, his feet thudding onto the soft sand.
Jimmy held out a compact, matte-black box—a waterproof satellite beacon of his own design. "You know what to do, Anthony?"
"Affirmative, Jimmy. Establishing a permanent bridge."
The Dinobot surged into the water, his heavy frame submerging until only the sensors on his head remained visible. He walked along the sloping silt of the Loch bed, disappearing into the dark, peat-stained depths. Minutes later, he reached a hidden limestone crevice, tucking the beacon securely inside. It was a gift—a way for the Legend to speak to the Science, and for a boy to stay connected to his friend.
As Anthony returned to the shallows, a series of massive ripples broke the surface.
"Signal detected," Anthony announced. "She is approaching. I advised her to remain submerged for safety, but..."
It was too late. A long, elegant neck rose from the water, the skin glistening like wet slate in the morning sun. Nessie glided toward the shore, her movements silent and regal. Anthony, still waist-deep, reached out
metallic feelers to gently stroke the creature's muzzle.
Jimmy couldn't help himself. The scientist in him was overridden by the boy who loved monsters. He dived into the freezing water, clothes and all, kicking out toward the center of the cove.
"Oh dear," Marion sighed, reaching into the back of the van. "I'd better get the towels out. Again."
Jimmy reached the creature, his hands finding purchase on the smooth, ancient skin of her chin. He felt the vibration of her presence—a deep, resonant hum that felt like the heartbeat of the earth itself. Nessie let out a low, mournful moan—a sound of gratitude that vibrated in Jimmy's very chest.
Then, a telepathic pulse flickered through Anthony's speakers: "Got to go. Thank you for saving me. Thank you for making the Metal One. I will not forget our adventure."
With a powerful, graceful sweep of her flippers, Nessie turned. She merged back into the ink-black depths, leaving nothing but a fading circle of bubbles. Jimmy treading water, watched the spot until his teeth began to chatter.
"Come on, son," Tim called out, a rare softness in his voice. "Let’s get you into some dry clothes."
Jimmy scrambled back to shore, dripping and shivering but wearing a smile that could light up the entire Highlands. "Sorry, Mum. Got a bit carried away again."
Back at The Kelpie’s Rest, Rhona sat at her desk, staring at her monitor. Suddenly, a window popped up—a series of gold-colored geometric codes.
She began to decode them, her breath catching in her throat. It was a greeting. A rhythmic, intelligent pulse from the bottom of the Loch, relayed through the black box and bounced off a satellite.
Rhona leaped from her chair, performing a spontaneous, joyful jig across the wooden floor. "Oh, thank you!" she cried out to the empty room. "Thank you, Jimmy! And thank you,
Maximus!"
The bridge was open. The mystery was safe. And their adventures were only just beginning.

PLOT
OUTLINE:
Having
enjoyed a wicked Christmas in Herstmonceux, Jimmy's mum, Marion and dad,
Tim, decide to take a Scottish vacation to visit Marion's cousin, near Loch Ness. A road trip in her trusty
Volkswagen Kombi Camper
van. They set off just after Boxing Day, to arrive before New Year's Eve, for a reunion, having fitted winter tyres and installed a heater in the VW. They make it up the M1 to Edinburgh, and M90 to Inverness, then back down to Drumnadrochit. Where 'Rhona MacLeod' lives
alongside Loch Ness.
Anthony, travels on the roof-rack, using his cloak of invisibility to remain undetected. The trip is uneventful, the VW performing well, even in a snowy
blizzard, that soon clears near the famous Loch. It turns out that Rhona is a scientist. She has been studying the Loch for signs of the Monster of legend. Once reunited and settled in, Rohna tells that she has photographed the elusive monster, but nobody believes her. A famous debunker, 'Angus Campbell', discredits Rhona publicly. Calling her crazy, to even think such a legend could have any roots in reality.
Anthony, the Magic Dinobot, who is not supposed to be on this trip, spots the monster in the Loch through a mist, with his incredible AI sensors, telling Jimmy, secretly. Jimmy keeps this to himself. Marion and Tim support Rhona
in principle, but are somewhat skeptical. Although, they love the idea of the legend, having been brought up on the story. Then Marion realised that
Anthony has been a passenger, and scolds Jimmy. Then forgives him, when Jimmy reveals that the dinobot has seen the monster.
Tim does not believe the dinobot, but when out on the banks of the Loch, in the mist, the monster reveals itself to Antony, attempting to communicate with the
AI robot, and they kind of speak to each other, the dinobot deciphering the
monsters grunts and songs. Marion, Tim and Jimmy see this, and are spellbound, but know nobody will believe them. So, agree to keep it a secret.
Then, an investigative reporter,
Charley
Temple, visits to report on the sighting, for Jill
Bird, at the BBC World News. There is enough evidence to keep the legend alive, and Charley, a fan of Jimmy from when he won a coding prize for his work on
AI, tends to believe him and Rhona, keeping the legend alive. Charley spots the dinobot when creeping around at night, but decides to keep this to herself, to protect Jimmy and Rhona. Then, Angus Campbell's boat is found out on the Loch, with claw marks, and
harpoons onboard, but no Angus. His body is never found. This is reported on by Jill Bird at the BBC and it goes viral, the mystery remaining a mystery. The family return home safely, vowing to keep their encounter with the monster a secret.
