THE
EMPTY VESSEL
The morning sun rose over Loch Ness not with a cheer, but with a cold, apologetic light that struggled to pierce the remaining tatters of the storm. The water was unnervingly still—a sheet of dark glass that hid its secrets well.
It was the local patrol boat that found it: 'The Kelpie’s Revenge,' Angus’s modified Drifter, bobbing aimlessly in the wake of a departing tourist cruiser. The electric motor was dead, the spotlight shattered. But it was the hull that made the seasoned officers pull back in a cold sweat. The wood was gouged with deep, rhythmic furrows, and the heavy iron harpoons had been twisted into useless scrap metal. To the police, it looked as though the small vessel had been caught in the churning, industrial-sized propellers of one of the many large cruisers that frequented the Loch—a silent collision in the blinding mist.
Of Angus Campbell, there was no sign. Only his salt-stained cap remained, floating in a puddle of oily water.
The Inquest was held in a drafty, wood-paneled hall. Outside, tucked into a stand of ancient pines, a shimmer in the air suggested something was there, though no eye could track it. Anthony sat in full
camouflage mode, his sensors fine-tuned to catch every whisper through the stone walls, transmitting the audio directly to Jimmy’s earpiece.
The Coroner, a man with a face like crumpled parchment and a pair of spectacles that magnified his piercing eyes, peered over the bench. He looked less like a civil servant and more like a judge presiding over a supernatural tribunal. "Mr.
MacGregor," he began, his voice dry. "What can you tell us about the state of mind of Mr. Campbell?"
Hamish stood, his massive frame dwarfing the witness box. "What I can say, sir, is that
Angus Campbell was a man consumed. He didn't just want to find a monster; he wanted to conquer it. He drank to forget the Loch wouldn't give up its secrets."
The Coroner’s pen scratched frantically. "And Professor MacLeod... we have heard the deceased harbored a particular... professional jealousy toward you?"
Rhona stood tall. "Mr. Campbell viewed the Loch as a personal adversary. He was obsessed. If he went out in that storm, it was because his obsession outweighed his common sense."
The Coroner leaned forward. "Professor, do you know of anyone who held a grudge? Anyone who would want to... murder him?"
A heavy silence fell. Outside, the camouflaged Anthony processed the word "murder." His programming hummed—the Three Laws were absolute. He had used his electronic pulse to scramble Angus's sonar to protect the creature, but the storm and the heavy traffic of the cruisers had done the rest. He had not harmed a soul.
"Murder?" Rhona replied steadily. "No. He was a man troubled by his own mind. He went looking for a fight with a legend and lost his footing."
A heavy, suffocating silence fell over the room. Jimmy felt his heart hammer against his ribs.
"Indeed," the Coroner mused, beginning his summation.. "His boat was found like a modern-day
Mary
Celeste. It seems clear... he was obsessed, and like Donald Campbell on Coniston, he may have harboured a subconscious death wish. He went out to slay a phantom and was claimed by the very element he tried to tame. I am recording a verdict of death by misadventure."
He brought his gavel down. "Case closed."
Rhona looked to Hamish, who remained stone-faced, a true Keeper to the end. Finally, Hamish looked at Jimmy. There was no wink, no nod—just a steady, dead-pan gaze that said everything. The secret was safe. The "Empty Vessel" was all the world would ever know.
As the room cleared, Charley caught Rhona’s eye. She allowed herself a small, knowing smile—the look of a journalist who knew the real story would never fit in a police report.
Thankfully, the "claw like marks" on the boat hadn't been teeth;
to the police, it looked as though the small vessel had been caught in the churning, industrial-sized propellers of one of the many large cruisers that frequented the Loch—a silent collision in the blinding mist.
As they exited the hall, they looked toward the trees where the air seemed to ripple ever so slightly. The secret was safe. The world would blame the cruisers and the storm, and the "Empty Vessel" would become just another ghost story for the tourists.

PLOT
OUTLINE:
Having
enjoyed a wicked Christmas in Herstmonceux, Jimmy's mum, Marion and dad,
Tim, decide to take a Scottish vacation to visit Marion's cousin, near Loch Ness. A road trip in her trusty
Volkswagen Kombi Camper
van. They set off just after Boxing Day, to arrive before New Year's Eve, for a reunion, having fitted winter tyres and installed a heater in the VW. They make it up the M1 to Edinburgh, and M90 to Inverness, then back down to Drumnadrochit. Where 'Rhona MacLeod' lives
alongside Loch Ness.
Anthony, travels on the roof-rack, using his cloak of invisibility to remain undetected. The trip is uneventful, the VW performing well, even in a snowy
blizzard, that soon clears near the famous Loch. It turns out that Rhona is a scientist. She has been studying the Loch for signs of the Monster of legend. Once reunited and settled in, Rohna tells that she has photographed the elusive monster, but nobody believes her. A famous debunker, 'Angus Campbell', discredits Rhona publicly. Calling her crazy, to even think such a legend could have any roots in reality.
Anthony, the Magic Dinobot, who is not supposed to be on this trip, spots the monster in the Loch through a mist, with his incredible AI sensors, telling Jimmy, secretly. Jimmy keeps this to himself. Marion and Tim support Rhona
in principle, but are somewhat skeptical. Although, they love the idea of the legend, having been brought up on the story. Then Marion realised that
Anthony has been a passenger, and scolds Jimmy. Then forgives him, when Jimmy reveals that the dinobot has seen the monster.
Tim does not believe the dinobot, but when out on the banks of the Loch, in the mist, the monster reveals itself to Antony, attempting to communicate with the
AI robot, and they kind of speak to each other, the dinobot deciphering the
monsters grunts and songs. Marion, Tim and Jimmy see this, and are spellbound, but know nobody will believe them. So, agree to keep it a secret.
Then, an investigative reporter,
Charley
Temple, visits to report on the sighting, for Jill
Bird, at the BBC World News. There is enough evidence to keep the legend alive, and Charley, a fan of Jimmy from when he won a coding prize for his work on
AI, tends to believe him and Rhona, keeping the legend alive. Charley spots the dinobot when creeping around at night, but decides to keep this to herself, to protect Jimmy and Rhona. Then, Angus Campbell's boat is found out on the Loch, with claw marks, and
harpoons onboard, but no Angus. His body is never found. This is reported on by Jill Bird at the BBC and it goes viral, the mystery remaining a mystery. The family return home safely, vowing to keep their encounter with the monster a secret.
