ROAD TO THE HIGHLANDS - THE DRUMNADROCHIT WELCOME

The snow had finally tapered off into a fine, glittering mist as Miss Ocean crunched up a gravel driveway lined with ancient, lichen-covered stone walls. There, nestled against the dark silhouette of the hills, sat Rhona MacLeod’s cottage. It was a picture-perfect slice of the Highlands, looking like something plucked straight out of a classic movie—all white-washed stone, a slate roof, and a chimney puffing out the sweet, earthy scent of peat smoke. It reminded Marion of one of her favourite movies, starring John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara: "The Quiet Man." Though, that was set in Ireland. She sighed.

"Rhona, this is fabulous!" Marion exclaimed, sliding the nearside door open and stepping out into the biting Highland air.

The two cousins embraced warmly, a flurry of woolly scarves and laughter. Tim stepped out of the driver's side, still looking a bit dazed by the sheer, rugged beauty of the place. He patted the side of the two-tone blue van.

"Is the parking okay there, Rhona?" Tim asked, his practical 'Dad-brain' always on duty. "I don't want to block the lane."

Rhona laughed, a bright, melodic sound. "Of course, General! It’s perfect. And what a wild ride you must have had. A surfing wagon in the middle of a Highland winter?"

Marion blushed slightly, smoothing a hand over the vinyl graphics. "She’s my pride and joy."

"And she’s a historic vehicle!" Jimmy added, rushing over to give his second cousin a hug. "She has a high-pressure oil pump and everything."

Rhona smiled, her eyes twinkling. "I see you’ve brought plenty of gear, Jimmy. That’s a fair bit of luggage on the roof rack. Does it need to come inside? The weather can be temperamental."

"Oh, no!" Jimmy said, perhaps a bit too loudly. He tried to dial back the panic in his voice. "It’s... er... specialized equipment. Better left under the tarp. Very hardy."

"Well, come inside then, into the warm," Rhona beckoned.

As they crossed the threshold, the cozy "crofter" charm of the exterior gave way to something far more mysterious. The living room was a jungle of cables, glowing sonar screens, and corkboards pinned with hundreds of grainy, black-and-white photographs. It looked like a wizard’s study, if the wizard had been obsessed with underwater acoustics.

"Wow! What are all these, Miss MacLeod?" Jimmy breathed, his eyes wide.

"My life’s work, Jimmy," Rhona said. She looked suddenly weary, her shoulders sagging just a fraction.

Marion leaned in, peering at a photo of a dark, curved shape breaking the surface of the water. "Are those pictures of what I think they are?"

Rhona’s expression turned guarded. "Yes, cousin. But my scientific work is not exactly appreciated by the locals. They think I'm chasing ghosts. To the skeptics, these pictures prove nothing. They just think I'm part of the 'legend-making' business."

Jimmy’s watch gave a sharp, silent vibration against his wrist. He glanced down. A text-line from Anthony appeared on the tiny screen: "SCANNING ENVIRONMENT. LOCATION STABLE. CAN I DISMOUNT? THERE IS A BARN WITH DRY CARBON-BASED VEGETATION (HAY) THAT WOULD PROVIDE EXCELLENT THERMAL MASKING."

Jimmy quickly tapped a reply: "STAY PUT, MAXIMUS. SHUT DOWN. HIBERNATION MODE ONLY. COMPLIANCE?"

A second later, the watch buzzed: "COMPLIANCE."

"Follow me, I'll show you to your rooms," Rhona said, leading them up a narrow wooden staircase. The guest rooms were beautiful—spartan but cozy, with thick wool blankets and the smell of dried lavender.

"It’s beautiful, Rhona. Thank you," Marion said.

"Right then," Rhona said, clapping her hands. "Dinner is almost ready. I hope no one objects to Haggis?"

Jimmy blinked. "What’s a Haggis, Mum? Is it a type of bird?"

"Oh, no, dear," Marion chuckled. "It’s a traditional Scottish dish. A bit like a very large, spicy sausage."

"If it’s food, I’m in," Jimmy said, his stomach giving a loud, opportunistic growl. "I’m starving."

A few minutes later, they were gathered around a heavy oak table. The Haggis sat in the center, steaming alongside a mountain of creamy mashed potatoes—or 'tatties,' as Rhona called them.

"I grew the potatoes myself, Jimmy," Rhona said. "I hope you like them mashed?"

"Like them? I love them," the coding expert said, piling a generous scoop onto his plate.

"And how is school, Jimmy?" Rhona asked. "Marion tells me you're quite the whiz."

"He’s top in robotics," Marion said, beaming with pride.

"How marvelous," Rhona said, her interest genuinely piqued. "Any good projects on the go?"

"Yes, cousin Rhona..."

"Call me Rhona, Jimmy. We’re family."

Jimmy felt a little awkward—he wasn't used to being so informal with adults—but he found he liked her immensely. She wasn't just a cousin; she was a scientist fighting for the truth. He watched her for a moment, thinking about the secret stowaway on the roof and the sonar screens in the other room. They had more in common than she knew.

He took a brave bite of the Haggis. The adults held their breath.

"Mmmm! This is good! It’s... meaty! And the potato is so creamy."

Tim and Marion exhaled in unison. "Delicious, isn't it?" Tim said, digging in.

"So," Jimmy said, his mouth half-full of tatties. "How do you actually pronounce the name of this place? I saw the sign, but it looks like a secret code."

"It is a mouthful," Rhona laughed. "It’s just as it’s written: DRUM-NA-DROCHIT."

"Drumanchit?" Jimmy tried. "No... Drum-chint-nacht?"

The table erupted in laughter. Even Tim, usually the serious one, was clutching his sides.

"Not bad, Jimmy!" Rhona cheered. "Try again. Drum-na-drochit."

"Drum-na-drochit," Jimmy repeated carefully. "I think I’ll have to practice that one before we go to the shops."

As the laughter died down and the warmth of the cottage wrapped around them, Jimmy looked out the window toward the dark, silent expanse of the Loch. Somewhere out there, something was hiding. And somewhere on the roof, his best friend was waiting to find it.

PLOT OUTLINE:

Having enjoyed a wicked Christmas in Herstmonceux, Jimmy's mum, Marion and dad, Tim, decide to take a Scottish vacation to visit Marion's cousin, near Loch Ness. A road trip in her trusty Volkswagen Kombi Camper van. They set off just after Boxing Day, to arrive before New Year's Eve, for a reunion, having fitted winter tyres and installed a heater in the VW. They make it up the M1 to Edinburgh, and M90 to Inverness, then back down to Drumnadrochit. Where 'Rhona MacLeod' lives alongside Loch Ness.

Anthony, travels on the roof-rack, using his cloak of invisibility to remain undetected. The trip is uneventful, the VW performing well, even in a snowy blizzard, that soon clears near the famous Loch. It turns out that Rhona is a scientist. She has been studying the Loch for signs of the Monster of legend. Once reunited and settled in, Rohna tells that she has photographed the elusive monster, but nobody believes her. A famous debunker, 'Angus Campbell', discredits Rhona publicly. Calling her crazy, to even think such a legend could have any roots in reality. Anthony, the Magic Dinobot, who is not supposed to be on this trip, spots the monster in the Loch through a mist, with his incredible AI sensors, telling Jimmy, secretly. Jimmy keeps this to himself. Marion and Tim support Rhona in principle, but are somewhat skeptical. Although, they love the idea of the legend, having been brought up on the story. Then Marion realised that Anthony has been a passenger, and scolds Jimmy. Then forgives him, when Jimmy reveals that the dinobot has seen the monster.

Tim does not believe the dinobot, but when out on the banks of the Loch, in the mist, the monster reveals itself to Antony, attempting to communicate with the AI robot, and they kind of speak to each other, the dinobot deciphering the monsters grunts and songs. Marion, Tim and Jimmy see this, and are spellbound, but know nobody will believe them. So, agree to keep it a secret.

Then, an investigative reporter, Charley Temple, visits to report on the sighting, for Jill Bird, at the BBC World News. There is enough evidence to keep the legend alive, and Charley, a fan of Jimmy from when he won a coding prize for his work on AI, tends to believe him and Rhona, keeping the legend alive. Charley spots the dinobot when creeping around at night, but decides to keep this to herself, to protect Jimmy and Rhona. Then, Angus Campbell's boat is found out on the Loch, with claw marks, and harpoons onboard, but no Angus. His body is never found. This is reported on by Jill Bird at the BBC and it goes viral, the mystery remaining a mystery. The family return home safely, vowing to keep their encounter with the monster a secret.
