ENTER
CHARLEY TEMPLE - LONELY HOUNDED NESSIE
While the mists of the Loch held prehistoric secrets, the newsrooms of
London were buzzing with a different kind of energy. At the heart of it was
Jill
Bird, a news anchor who stood like a lighthouse in a sea of sensationalism. She didn't care for clickbait; she cared for the truth.
"Charley? Long time no speak," Jill said, her voice crackling over the line with professional urgency.
Charley
Temple, a reporter with a nose for a story and a penchant for adventure, leaned back in her chair. "Jill, likewise. What’s cooking? Is there a scandal brewing in the capital?"
"Not the capital. The Highlands. Have you seen the blogs about the Loch Ness Monster lately?"
Charley chuckled, spinning a pen between her fingers. "Not recently, but I know the legend. Who doesn't?"
"Listen, there’s a chap called Angus Campbell trying to debunk the whole thing—and he’s targeting a Professor Rhona MacLeod. Her credentials are impeccable, Charley. If he’s trying to discredit a scientist of her caliber, there’s a story there. How are you fixed?"
Charley sipped a chilled Solar
Cola, the fizz sharp and sweet. "Let me check the diary." She paused for exactly three seconds. "I have a few days. When were you thinking?"
"How about now? I have a feeling about this one, Charley. It’s more than just a crank with a blog."
"I'm on it."
The drive north was a kaleidoscope of emerald green and heather-purple. To Charley,
Scotland looked like one giant, magnificent
golf course, punctuated by the promise of world-class
salmon and the famous Angus beefsteaks. She hummed to herself as she pulled into the village of Drumnadrochit.
Following the locals' directions, she wound her way to a secluded cottage;
'The Kelpie's Rest.' She gasped as it came into view. "Oh my god," she whispered. "It’s just like something out of
The Quiet
Man." It was a postcard-perfect slice of the Highlands.
Then she saw 'Miss
Ocean.' The iconic Volkswagen Kombi sat parked next to a rugged
Jeep. Charley’s brow furrowed. That van... she’d seen those decals before.
When the front door opened, a woman with a bright, familiar energy stood there.
"Good day," Charley began professionally. "By any chance could I speak with Professor..."
"MacLeod," Marion Watson finished with a friendly smile.
Charley squinted, the gears of her memory grinding into place. "Don't I know you? I'm sure I do..."
"I'm Marion Watson."
The dots connected with a snap. "Not the surfing champion from Bude? The one who tames the
Atlantic rollers?" Charley gestured to the
VW. "I knew I recognized that
wagon!"
Just then, the barn door creaked. A young boy stepped out, wiping grease from his hands. Charley felt a second jolt of recognition. She looked puzzled, her reporter's brain scanning files of past assignments.
"Hello, Miss Temple," the boy said. "I'm Jimmy."
"Not the AI coding champion of
Sussex? The boy who built a neural network before he could drive?"
Jimmy beamed. "Yes, Miss Temple. You came to my school in
Herstmonceux. And later at
Hailsham College."
Charley laughed, genuinely impressed. "A talented family indeed. So, is the Professor at this address?"
"Come in, Miss Temple," Jimmy invited, stepping aside. "Take a tea with us. I'll go find Rhona for you."
Inside the cozy, stone-walled cottage, Rhona joined the group. She looked at Charley with a mix of scientific caution and curiosity.
"Professor
MacLeod, I presume," Charley said, extending a hand. "I'm from the BBC. Charley’s the name."
Rhona hesitated for a heartbeat. Should she eject the visitor? Or was this an ally? "Why the visit, Charley? We’re a bit off the beaten track for a news crew."
Charley decided to play it straight. These were "good eggs," as her father would say. "My editor, Jill Bird, heard rumors about a man called
Angus
Campbell. He’s running a rather loud blog about..."
"The Loch Ness
Monster," Marion, Jimmy, and Rhona said in perfect, haunting unison.
Charley’s eyes widened. "And, forgive me, but you," she pointed to Rhona, "are a world-renowned expert on
evolutionary biology. We wondered what your take might be."
Rhona looked at Jimmy, then back to the reporter. "I am researching the subject objectively. I have an open mind as to... possibilities."
Charley’s internal "truth-meter" spiked. There was an undercurrent here—something massive lurking just beneath the surface of the conversation. "And what of the naysayer? Campbell? He’s being quite a bully, isn't he?"
"He's downright rude, if you ask me," Jimmy interjected. He quickly retold the story of the confrontation at the 'Kelpie's Bridle' and the sour attitude of the landlord,
Hamish
MacGregor.
"Oh dear," Charley sighed. "Sounds like a real brute. It seems his goal is to discredit your work entirely, Professor."
"I'm a scientist," Rhona said firmly. "I'm just doing my job."
Charley looked around the room, seeing the protective way the family stood together. "Well, for what it's worth, the locals—and people where I’m from—we love the
legend. Are you sisters, or cousins?"
She noticed Jimmy clutching his Solar
Cola. "That's my favorite drink, Jimmy. Good choice."
Jimmy instinctively pulled the bottle a little closer, his "protective mode" still engaged. The room erupted in laughter, the tension breaking like a wave on the shore.
Hidden in the barn, perfectly camouflaged and silent, Anthony watched the thermal signature of the newcomer. He didn't chirp. He didn't click. But he was recording everything.

PLOT
OUTLINE:
Having
enjoyed a wicked Christmas in Herstmonceux, Jimmy's mum, Marion and dad,
Tim, decide to take a Scottish vacation to visit Marion's cousin, near Loch Ness. A road trip in her trusty
Volkswagen Kombi Camper
van. They set off just after Boxing Day, to arrive before New Year's Eve, for a reunion, having fitted winter tyres and installed a heater in the VW. They make it up the M1 to Edinburgh, and M90 to Inverness, then back down to Drumnadrochit. Where 'Rhona MacLeod' lives
alongside Loch Ness.
Anthony, travels on the roof-rack, using his cloak of invisibility to remain undetected. The trip is uneventful, the VW performing well, even in a snowy
blizzard, that soon clears near the famous Loch. It turns out that Rhona is a scientist. She has been studying the Loch for signs of the Monster of legend. Once reunited and settled in, Rohna tells that she has photographed the elusive monster, but nobody believes her. A famous debunker, 'Angus Campbell', discredits Rhona publicly. Calling her crazy, to even think such a legend could have any roots in reality.
Anthony, the Magic Dinobot, who is not supposed to be on this trip, spots the monster in the Loch through a mist, with his incredible AI sensors, telling Jimmy, secretly. Jimmy keeps this to himself. Marion and Tim support Rhona
in principle, but are somewhat skeptical. Although, they love the idea of the legend, having been brought up on the story. Then Marion realised that
Anthony has been a passenger, and scolds Jimmy. Then forgives him, when Jimmy reveals that the dinobot has seen the monster.
Tim does not believe the dinobot, but when out on the banks of the Loch, in the mist, the monster reveals itself to Antony, attempting to communicate with the
AI robot, and they kind of speak to each other, the dinobot deciphering the
monsters grunts and songs. Marion, Tim and Jimmy see this, and are spellbound, but know nobody will believe them. So, agree to keep it a secret.
Then, an investigative reporter,
Charley
Temple, visits to report on the sighting, for Jill
Bird, at the BBC World News. There is enough evidence to keep the legend alive, and Charley, a fan of Jimmy from when he won a coding prize for his work on
AI, tends to believe him and Rhona, keeping the legend alive. Charley spots the dinobot when creeping around at night, but decides to keep this to herself, to protect Jimmy and Rhona. Then, Angus Campbell's boat is found out on the Loch, with claw marks, and
harpoons onboard, but no Angus. His body is never found. This is reported on by Jill Bird at the BBC and it goes viral, the mystery remaining a mystery. The family return home safely, vowing to keep their encounter with the monster a secret.
